A thyroid function blood test is a test that measures the levels of thyroid hormones and other substances in the blood. The thyroid is a small gland located in the neck that produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism. The thyroid function test is used to evaluate how well the thyroid is functioning and to diagnose thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. The thyroid function test typically measures the levels of the following substances in the blood: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroxine (T4): the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland that regulates metabolism. Triiodothyronine (T3): a hormone produced by the thyroid gland that also regulates metabolism. The thyroid function test may also include additional tests, such as thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO) test, to check for the presence of antibodies that may indicate autoimmune thyroid disease.
