What are ovarian cysts?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops on an ovary.

Most ovarian cysts occur naturally, are a common women's health condition which can go away on their own.

However, they can prevent you conceiving and become large enough to block the blood supply to the ovary and cause damage.

What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?

Usually, a woman may not know they have an ovarian cyst however if it is large enough to cause problems or if it bursts, then you may experience:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Difficulty emptying your bowels
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Unusual bloating and a swollen tummy
  • Feeling very full quickly

What is the treatment for ovarian cysts?

Usually ovarian cysts will go away on their own but they can be surgically removed if they are causing you persistent problems. Most cysts can be removed with minimal access surgery such as a laparoscopy.
